14 Days Later: Portland Breweries Persist

A little over two weeks ago, knowing very well what was happening around the world, I set out to find a provision I overlooked (hand sanitizer) and to spend what I anticipated to be the last visits to taprooms for a while.

I wrote a whole article about that day (which may be posted someday…), but we were spun so quickly into this new reality of everything shutting down, that the levity I was seeking to imbue in the article felt absurd and detached.

Over the past two weeks I’ve spent about 95% of my time at home, with the other 5% spent stopping into work, buying groceries, or picking up food and beer to-go from local breweries. Always keeping the prescribed distance, following the guidance provided at each location, and always with the intention of helping keep our local small businesses afloat.

I would love to get out to play disc golf, go for a hike, or other outdoorsy stuff, though my days have been busier than usual, working to support my employer, Day One Distribution. Going from 85% draft sales to 85% package sales requires a little more hustle, plus more avenues for packaged beer sales. I’m in charge of our chain store accounts, as well as creating and updating our sales sheets/availability/inventory of everything new coming town. It’s been taxing.

And it’s an interesting spot to be in – a local beer writer devoted to the Portland beer scene, simultaneously supplying the state’s taprooms and stores with beer from out-of-state. It feels like a conflict of interest, but I’ve come to understand why what we do is so important. It goes beyond providing fanatic craft beer customers what they desire, as we’re also providing local brewers and owners new flavors/ideas/concepts to explore. Not to mention helping other small West Coast breweries get their beer to market, so they too can keep making beer, minimize losses, and in turn, assist our business in helping to supply local merchants.

So in my free time, to do my part, I’ve tried to visit at least one brewery or bottle shop each day and a different one each time. I’ve gotten delivery of food and picked up crowlers from Wayfinder and picked-up an order of food and beer from Von Ebert – Glendoveer. On Saturday I received delivery of crowlers from Threshold (their new Ghost Galaxy Hazy IPA is quite impressive), and last week had two 4-packs delivered from Baerlic (thanks Nick!). I’ve also visited Culmination, Little Beast, Ruse, and Upright, plus The BeerMongers, FlyBoy and Mayfly taprooms for four-packs and/or crowlers.

I still have way more to visit or receive delivery from, though I’m running out of space for it all, even after being gifted a beer fridge (thanks Bryan & Arianna!). Also know that I’m of strong health, consuming Emergen-C every day, washing/sanitizing my hands incessantly, and taking every precaution necessary to support these businesses. I wouldn’t undertake these Quests without doing all I can to keep myself and others safe.

While making these visits, I’ve learned a lot about how things are going and what the temporary normal looks like these days. The challenges are so very different for each and it seems like everyone’s doing things a bit differently, evidenced by the list below. Just as my company has had to switch from draft to cans/bottles for distribution, so to have breweries had to focus on crowler fills, 4-packs, and bottles. On top of that, they’ve had to furlough most, if not all, of their front-of-house staff, with owners and full-time/salaried employees taking on the brunt of the effort to stay above water.

The most successful model we’ve seen are those making home deliveries. With wholesale and chain store deliveries alone not being able to cover the costs of operations, crowler sales, curb-side pick-up, 4-packs to go, along with home deliveries are keeping most locations barely in the black. So if you feel safe enough to visit these locations, please do so – otherwise staying home, and having beer delivered is your best option.
